At tonights meeting, our guest speaker will speak about the "Dark Side of Technology". Dr. Thomas P. Keenan was raised in the Bronx, New York and attended the Bronx High School of Science. In the early 60s while attending Columbia University, he was News Director and President of WKCR FM which was broadcasting 15 hours daily to an audience of over 1 million New Yorkers. He graduated from Columbia University with a BA and an MSc. in Engineering and later returned to Columbia for another Master’s and a Doctorate. His first 'official' job was with the civil engineering firm that designed the World Trade Center. Summers were spent leading bicycle tours for American Youth Hostels and his first tour to Canada brought him west to ride the Icefields Parkway between Jasper and Banff and to climb at Lake Louise. He fell in love with Calgary and has lived here ever since, except for short stints in places like Bangkok, Thailand and at Harvard University. At the University of Calgary in 1972 he has worked as a systems programmer, computer science professor, and Dean of the Faculty of Continuing Education. He is currently a Professor in the Faculty of Environmental doing research on “smart communities.” He has served as a Technology Correspondent for CBC Radio and Television and writes a weekly column for the Business Edge newspaper and a bi-weekly Men’s Health column for the Calgary Herald and other newspapers. He serves on the Board of the Society for Policing of Cyberspace and is an internationally-recognized expert on computer security. He travels extensively and has more than a passing expertise in the preparation of Thai cookery. |
